The Swedish Social Democratic Party wishes to express its profound concern regarding the escalation of violence in Turkey ahead of the November 1st elections. We declare our undivided solidarity with the victims and survivors of the acts of violence, with our sister parties HDP and CHP and with Turkey’s progressive and pacific political forces.
Last week’s terrorist attack against peaceful political activists in Ankara killed more than a hundred human beings and left many more wounded. The target, a manifestation organized by HDP and the trade union movement, demanded peace and an end to the violence that has devastated not least the eastern parts of the country in recent months. Many political activists and other civilians have been killed and subjected to serious ill-treatment while access to information has been impeded by for example systematic censorship of the social media.
The Ankara terrorist attack now stands out as the single worst terrorist crime in modern Turkish history and is an apparent attempt to undermine development towards peace, justice and democracy. In Diyarbakir in June, Suruc in July and now in Ankara, attacks have been carried out to silence the HDP-party and silence its message of peace. We stand firmly by our sister party and Turkey’s peaceful progressive forces. We know that political tactics of violence and fear will not succeed.
We expect all necessary measures to be put in place in order to successfully investigate the atrocities committed, to hold those responsible accountable and to effectively uphold the protection of forthcoming political meetings, irrespectively of location and affiliation. Ensuring the security of the election campaign is required in order to enable free and fair elections, in which citizens in every part of Turkey freely can take part.
We wish the best of success to both our sister parties, CHP and HDP in the elections and in their continued struggle for a more peaceful, more just and more democratic future.
